Sample Wedding Speech
Title of clergyman, (If applicable) ladies and gentlemen (Or Family and friends)
When someone asks you to be their best man you have mixed emotions. You feel privileged to have been asked, of course, but you also have doubts about your ability to mastermind the whole day. Let's face it, that's what a good best man is supposed to do. It's up to him to see that the bride, the groom and their parents have no worries at all. It's up to him to ensure the comfort of the guests and, above all, he has to make sure not to forget the ring and to prepare a speech. On the plus side, of course, he gets to have his photo taken surrounded by beautiful bridesmaids!
So when John asked me to be his best man I hesitated, wondering if I were up to the job. However, a man who could persuade Mary to marry him had no trouble at all in persuading me that I was everything a best man should be. The more he spoke glowingly of my abilities the less I recognised myself. He did utter a few words of warning though. On no account, he told me, was I to tell you about our male bonding adventures together.
You see John and I have had many adventures together over the years. As my brother/friend I probably know him better than most. So I racked my brain trying to think of a story I could tell that wouldn't shock such a select gathering. John assured me, you see, that you were all VIP's. Added to that he didn't want his bride to be shocked either although I assure you Mary that you have improved him out of all recognition. All I can say is that John is a wonderful brother/friend, always there when you need him and that he is the soul of generosity. He has a wonderful sense of humour and time in his company is time well spent. He is so optimistic that no matter what troubles I have a few hours spent with John makes me feel ready to tackle the world again. The fact that we share so many hobbies ensures that we always have plenty to say to each other. Unfortunately he won't let me tell you those stories either!
Now you wouldn't believe me if I said he was perfect and Mary would have no challenge in her life if he were. I can tell you truthfully that, whatever about his mom, his teachers did not all think he was the genius of the year. I will admit he is not always the best timekeeper in the world. I will admit he has been known to be grumpy on a Monday morning and, whisper this, I have actually heard him snore. Overall, though, as a brother/friend I would have to give him ten out of ten.
Today he is marrying the love of his life. I know that because he told me so. I have to say that whether or not I approved of Mary, John was determined to marry her. Luckily I did approve. She is a lovely person, warm and caring and with a great sense of fun. I know she will suit John admirably and they will undoubtedly be gloriously happy together. Naturally too I fully expect to have lots of contact with her over the years and to get to know her even better. She obviously has impeccable taste too because, after all, she agreed to have me as best man at her wedding. So you can see I will thoroughly enjoy visiting the happy couple, especially if they entertain me the way we are being entertained today. I know you will all agree with me that our hosts should get a Michelin star for entertaining.
Today is a day for making memories. It's a day when Mary and John are surrounded by those who love them. Everyone is in sunny spirits and that's how it should be because we are celebrating a love match. Everyone here is wishing the couple a long and happy life together. In fact we are confidently expecting to be asked to their silver wedding anniversary celebration 25 years from now. Now that's what I call a vote of confidence!
Finally, I have been given the pleasant task of replying to John's toast to the bridesmaids. I could not disagree with him on such a special day. So yes John they are beautiful and they were all that bridesmaids should be. Now that we have such marvellous bridesmaids and such a wonderful couple not to mention a best man who is doing his best I think you will all agree that this is certainly the wedding of the year!
(The father of the bride traditionally toasts the couple. If, however, you are making the toast you should end as follows.)
Ladies and gentlemen (Or family and friends), please join me in a toast to the bride and groom. May they be as happy in their marriage as two such wonderful people deserve to be. The bride and groom!
As best man I'm happy to say
I've done all that the groom did ask
Brought the ring, stood by his side
In fact I completed each task.
When he was nervous shaking with fear
Forgot what he had to say
I prompted him, told him to say, "Yes"
So now he is married today.
He's chosen a simply wonderful bride
All through his days she'll stay by his side
Together I hope they'll have a great life
Our handsome groom and his lovely wife
May they to each other be loyal and true
And on this special day may God bless you.
